Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 26) — Super Typhoon Mawar is still seen to further gain strength as it make its way inside the country’s weather monitoring area, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Friday. Mawar is currently at 215 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 265 kph. However, its maximum sustained winds may further intensify to reach 220 kph, he noted.
The super typhoon will be tagged as "Betty" once it enters the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Friday night or early Saturday morning. It is projected to remain inside PAR in the next 3-5 days.
Mawar is moving westward at 20 kph and was last located 1,740 kilometers east of southeastern Luzon, PAGASA said.
The bureau said in its 5 a.m. update that the hoisting of Tropical Cyclone Wind Signals over some areas is possible within the next few days.
The super typhoon's rain bands will bring heavy rains over Cagayan Valley from Sunday until Tuesday next week.
Villamil warned that residents in the area should watch out for possible landslides and flash floods since they will be directly affected by the tropical cyclone. KEEP SAFE EVERYONE!
